The high-performance Nissan GT-R has continued to evolve since it was first introduced in 2007, and as the current model gets closer to the end of its run, many have been wondering what's in store for the GT-R's future. There have been rumors swirling about the possibility of a hybrid GT-R model and other powertrain enhancements, but nothing has ever been confirmed by Nissan. However, according to the brand's European EV Director Gareth Dunsmore, an all-electric Nissan GT-R model could eventually end up on the market sometime in the future.
Talk about an all-new Nissan GT-R model first began back in 2010. At the time, the company threw around the idea of an electric model, but EV technology was still years away from being able to fully deliver the expected capabilities of a performance car. With today’s advancements in automotive technology, this is no longer the case, which has reopened the door for a possible GT-R EV model in the coming years.
"I can't see a technical reason why we wouldn't be able to implement electric vehicle technology in something like a performance vehicle," Dunsmore said to Top Gear. "We can't build an electric GT-R today," he admitted. "But do I want to? I'd love to."
Before Nissan actually commits to developing an EV GT-R in the future, they would first have to prove the potential model could hold its own against other performance cars on the market. With this is mind, it could still be years before an all-electric GT-R comes into fruition, but in the meantime, you can test drive a gas-powered 2015 Nissan GT-R at Texas Nissan.
