Car Not Accelerating

If your Nissan stops accelerating quickly, you may not think much of the problem at first since your car will still keep running. However, poor acceleration is not a problem that you should ignore, as it can lead to more serious engine and performance problems with your Nissan later on. A problem with acceleration can usually be linked to an issue with the car's mechanical system, which means a trained Nissan mechanic should address the problem before it gets too bad. A mechanic can take a look at the car's engine to see where the problem lies. While the issue may stem from several causes, these are some of the most common engine ailments.

Dirty Oxygen Sensor or Mass Air Flow Sensor

The sensors in your Nissan's engine can be one source of the problem if you deal with sluggish acceleration. Your Nissan relies on two distinct but similar sensors called the mass airflow and oxygen sensors for optimal performance. If one of the sensors gets coated in dust or dirt, it won't properly regulate airflow to the engine, resulting in performance problems. The airflow sensor regulates air volume into the engine, while the oxygen sensor enables sufficient oxygen to enter the mechanical system.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor is also a critical part of engine performance. The throttle position sensor ensures that the throttle valve can open and close to allow fuel into the engine as required to run. The sensor gauges the position of the throttle valve's opening angle to regulate fuel flow. If the sensor stops functioning correctly, fuel flow into the engine can be disrupted, affecting the engine's performance ability.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter in your car's engine is another essential component for overall performance and operation. The fuel filter is a line of defense against contamination that can work its way into the engine and affect the car's performance. The fuel filter must be kept clear in order to work properly. If it needs to be replaced, a mechanic at our dealership can swap it out for a fresh one to restore your car's full performance potential.

Dirty Air Filter

As with the fuel filter, the engine's air filter needs to stay clean to properly eliminate harmful particles from the fuel lines so that they don't contaminate the engine. If your car is slow to accelerate, a mechanic can check the air filter to see if that's the source of the problem.
