The Nissan LEAF is a standout electric vehicle, ranking #2 in its class—a notable achievement in such a competitive market. While the LEAF already boasts a range of appealing features, recent upgrades have further boosted its popularity and competitive edge.
Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger
One of the most exciting updates for the Nissan LEAF is the introduction of the Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger. This innovative system not only allows the LEAF to draw power from the grid but also to send electricity back, making it the first electric vehicle in the U.S. capable of bi-directional energy flow.
The charger offers several advantages. It can store energy for future use or return electricity to the grid during off-peak times, potentially saving owners money. The bidirectional charger has passed rigorous industry standards, including UL and CHAdeMO certifications, and meets Nissan’s own requirements for safety and performance, making it fully approved for use with the LEAF.
The V2X Platform
In addition to the Fermata charger, Nissan is incorporating the V2X platform into the LEAF. This intelligent software system works seamlessly with the bidirectional charger, increasing the vehicle's power output by up to 33%. It also adheres to industry standards and features a cost-efficient design, reducing production costs and, in turn, customer prices. Both the bidirectional charger and V2X platform are being rolled out at Nissan dealerships and are available for fleet customers. Importantly, this new technology does not affect the LEAF’s warranty and may have been compatible with select LEAF models as early as 2013, depending on state regulations.
