This year’s G7 Summit in Ise-shima, Japan, marked the arrival of Nissan ProPilot, a new autonomous driving system slated to arrive on future Nissan models. The company showed off the new technology to European Council President Donald Tusk during an exclusive road test hosted as a part of the summit.
A special all-electric prototype based on the Nissan LEAF was used to demonstrate the automaker’s new autonomous technology. The model was equipped with a collection of unique components designed to support its capabilities, including laser scanners, cameras, radar and a Human Machine Interface. The laser scanners use 3D measurements to determine the distance between the car and its surroundings, allowing it to maneuver in tight spaces. A 360-degree camera system is also used to help determine the best route on sharp curving roads and at intersections.
As you can see in the video above, the demo held at the G7 Summit went off without a hitch, and due to the system’s success, Nissan has plans to begin offering the technology on a model in Japan by the end of this year. ProPilot is also expected to expand to other markets, including Europe, China and North America, following its initial debut in Japan.
