The Nissan LEAF electric vehicle has been incredibly successful since its arrival in 2010 and now Nissan has plans to add another EV into the mix, which they will reveal in 2016. Unlike the LEAF, the upcoming model will feature a range-extender engine, catering to a new group of buyers and expanding the automaker's EV lineup.

Australia's Motoring magazine was the first publication to receive details about the all-new range-extended EV which is being called a "series hybrid." In an interview with the mag, Nissan's deputy general manager, Yoshi Shimoida, revealed the news about the new vehicle and its internal combustion engine, which he said would act as a generator for the car's batteries rather than sending power to the wheels. These few details are the only ones Shimoida was willing to share about the range-extended electric car. He wouldn't even reveal the name of the new vehicle. However, he did say the name will be announced sometime in 2016, so we can expect to find out in the near future.

With other big brands offering their own range-extended EVs on the market today, it's smart of Nissan to jump on the bandwagon. The new vehicle will surely serve as an excellent addition to the automaker’s current lineup.
